History

Troy has a long history of farming,including dairy,wool and hay. The township was served by an electric trolley service that ran from Detroit until 1931. Commercial and industrial development reached Troy only after World War II.

The city is home to the Somerset Collection mall,one of the top ten shopping centers in Michigan. It is also a center of business,hosting the eastern campus of the International Academy. Newsweek magazine has ranked this school 7th in the nation.

The Troy Historic Village enables visitors to glimpse life in the township as it was in the 1800s. A town hall,a log cabin,a Greek Revival house,a printing shop,waggon shop,and quaint church and parsonage from the turn of century are among the carefully restored structures. The artifacts are technically shielded from repatriation by a 1970 Unesco treaty.

Troy is one of Metro Detroit’s largest malls. There are also several regional and national corporate headquarters in Troy,as well as a variety of family-owned and local businesses.

Parks & Recreation

Dozens of major companies make Troy a bustling center of business and commerce,with several offices and a 1.4 million-square-foot mall (the Somerset Collection). Two golf courses,as well as a nature centre and thousands of acres in parks are also available.

The Troy Recreation Complex is a full-service center with a 127,000 square-foot indoor pool,fitness center,locker rooms,dance/aerobics studios,shuffleboard court,meeting rooms,and a seniors center. The Kids Korner offers childcare to fitness members.

Residents and non-residents are able to register online for Troy Recreation Camps and events. Fitness passes,aquatics programs,and fitness passes can also be purchased.
